MP Bob Saroya Expresses Concerns Over So-Called “Safe Injection Sites”

Like Markham residents, I have some serious concerns about the Liberals’ plan to allow the operation of so-called “safe injection sites” for dangerous drugs, such as heroin. These drugs are addictive, and they have killed Canadians, including children. There are serious risks associated with these so-called “safe” sites will threaten our community.

So-called “safe injection sites” would allow drug addicts to inject themselves with drugs, including heroin and other illegal narcotics, with clean needles. Rather than discouraging people from using drugs, the presence of these sites encourages the use of narcotics since addicts will not need to fear that they are using dirty needles. The presence of such a site would also help drug dealers since local “customers” will have an environment where they can consume their drugs. This could mean more money for street gangs and drug cartels.

This policy is destructive to citizens and neighbourhoods. Imagine what would happen to a neighbourhood located near a so-called “safe injection site?” Drug users and dealers would frequently be in the area. These criminals would have a greater incentive to buy/rent homes near the site. This could also mean higher instances of petty crime in the area surrounding the site, as well as more serious offences such as drug trafficking. There might also be used needles on the ground, as well as drug residue on the surfaces that we touch, such as door handles and toilets in public places.

This wrongheaded policy will encourage the use of drugs which are dangerous to the community. I believe that the priority of the Canadian government should be to help people break their addictions to drugs. I want people to live healthy, productive and safe lives. The previous Conservative government invested close to $500 million per year in an anti-drug strategy, including programs for treatment and support for help those in need to get off of drugs. I am proud to be a member of a party which has taken concrete steps to keep Canadians, especially our children, away from drugs.
So-called “safe injection sites” harm both drug addicts and ordinary Canadians. This is why I strongly oppose the Liberals’ plan to allow these sites.
