STATEMENT BY MP BOB SAROYA ON WORLD REFUGEE DAY

OTTAWA, ON – Today Bob Saroya, Member of Parliament for Markham-Unionville and Official Opposition Deputy Critic for Citizenship and Immigration, issued the following statement on World Refugee Day:

“Today marks World Refugee Day, and I wish to take this occasion to raise awareness on the plight of Afghani Sikhs who continually encounter social discrimination and physical intimidation.”

“It was only a few decades ago that over 200,000 Sikhs lived in Afghanistan. Tragically, that number has dwindled to less than two thousand. Afghani Sikhs continually encounter social discrimination and physical intimidation, yet the Liberal government has expressed an attitude of indifference towards this travesty.

On World Refugee Day, we are reminded that Canada has an obligation to protect the most vulnerable populations in the world. I will continue to stand up for Afghani Sikhs and those persecuted around the world and encourage my colleagues on both sides of the floor to do the same.”
