National News

The federal government has denied church groups Canada Summer Jobs program funding to the tune of $50 000 in Markham. Many of these organizations offered summer camps for children and helped refugees adapting to life in Canada. These cuts are taking place while groups with terror ties and a history of discriminatory rhetoric are once again receiving funding.

The Parliamentary Budget Officer (PBO), issued a new report entitled “The Impact of a Pan-Canadian Carbon Pricing Levy on PBO’s GDP Projection.” The report states:

With the implementation of a Canada-wide carbon pricing levy rising from $10 per tonne of CO2 equivalent in 2018 to $50 per tonne in 2022, we projected that real GDP would be 0.5 per cent ($10 billion) lower in 2022 compared to a scenario without the carbon pricing levy.

The carbon tax does not reduce greenhouse gas emissions, it costs Canadians more money (for example, by adding 10 or more cents per litre to the cost of gas plus HST), and it hurts our overall economy. Families need to drive to work, school, sports and run errands. This punitive tax will make life harder for Canadian families. That’s why I am firmly against the Liberal carbon tax. I do not believe that the federal government should attempt to force provinces to implement carbon taxes. We know this carbon tax will negatively impact families and without positively impacting the environment. This government does not have a revenue problem, they have a spending problem, before adding another tax to Canadians they should reevaluate their expenditures.

20 000 illegal migrants have crossed into Canada since Justin Trudeau tweeted #WelcometoCanada, including a registered sex offender. This will directly impact Canadians travelling this summer with significant delays because of the government’s failure to manage a planned immigration system. Our country must prioritize the safety of Canadians and protect those legal immigrants who wait many years to become Canadian and play by the rules.

Local News

Significant power outages hit Markham earlier this month leaving 100 000 without power for several hours.

I attended the Unionville Milliken Soccer Club’s Inaugural League 1 Ontario Semi Professional Soccer Game.

I joined the Uttar-Pradeshies for an event benefiting Sick Kids. There is great philanthropic work being done by cultural organizations in the Greater Toronto Area (GTA). I also attended the Lebanese Friends of Canada for their annual Mother’s Day event in Toronto, a wonderful celebration of family and community.

I spoke to high school students in Markham about politics and economics.

I also participated in a Small and Medium Enterprise event hosted by the Indo-Canada Chamber of Commerce. Small businesses are the backbone of the Canadian economy and they are feeling the pinch with the federal and provincial Liberal governments.
