(June 1st, 2018) Ottawa, ON – Bob Saroya Member of Parliament for Markham-Unionville, Associate Shadow Minister for Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship is deeply disappointed by the announcement made by the United States government yesterday that they will impose tariffs of 25 per cent on imported steel and 10 per cent on imported aluminum, citing national security interests.

Mr. Saroya believes that these trade restrictions are unacceptable and counterproductive to strengthening our historically close trade relationship with the United States. He also stated that:

“These new U.S. tariff is a serious blow to the Canadian men and women across the country who rely on this industry to put food on the table for their families”

“Steel is a crucial component Canada’s national economy. Domestic steel operations directly employ some 23,000 Canadians while supporting an additional 100,000 indirect jobs. Consequently, the sector provides an injection of $1.7 billion into the Canadian payroll. Yesterday’s decision will deeply hurt the 2,3000 Canadian households whose livelihood are directly supported by employment in Canadian steel manufacturing as well as the many Canadians that are indirectly involved with the industry.”

“Canada has a long history of fair and balanced trade with our United States, to the mutual benefit of both nations. These new tariffs do not advance the national security interests of the United States, but instead works to undermine our long standing history of fair and open trade and our shared North American competiveness. Furthermore, these tariffs will also risk delaying U.S. projects, significantly increase cost for U.S. businesses and hurt U.S. employment that rely heavily on Canadian steel.”
